Beautiful 'best of' collection featuring photographs from the past 10 years by Ryan McGinley. I'm usually not a fan of greatest hits type books but this is an exception. The material is cohesive and provides the best look in print at the various bodies of works he has produced. Production-wise this is first class with excellent color reproductions and a quality hardcover binding. There is another McGinley 'best of' collection due this spring so it will be interesting to see how the two books compare. For the time being this is the best McGinley book published to date and highly recommended.
bought this and "whistle in the wind" thinking it's different project/photos but it was just like 3 different ones. return. other book is better.
Though by no means an expert, I enjoy photography. I usually come to a photographer by seeing a photograph I really like and then tracking down the one who made it. As I recall, I first saw a photograph of McGinley's in an issue of Time Out New York, advertising his show at the Whitney. (That photograph is reproduced in this volume as #64--Lizzy, 2002.) I was so intrigued by that photo that I went to see the Whitney show and have been following McGinley's work ever since.The thing I think I like most about McGinley's work is the importance of motion in it. The way the figures jump and run and fall seems to capture the youthful energy of the people he captures. Even when the figures are still, they seem to be at rest after some sort of exertion. This dynamism in his work just draws the eye. And his use of color in his photos, if not always quite natural, does not generally stray into garishness or surrealism, which would turn me off.Overall this is a very nice collection of McGinley's work. It has selections that range from his early to most recent work. It is one of the best collections of photographs I have seen recently and I would recommend it highly to both fans and those who are new to his work.
first I must say it was my first time buying from Amazon and they are the quickest! i had the book in no time!I highly recommend this book for every Ryan Mcginley/Photography fan. this is a great book and i'm enjoying it a lot. I knew almost every photo from Ryan's website, but having an actual book makes all the difference.The book has a lot of Ryan's photos and from various years and works.great book.
